How do you explain the different mortality rates between the five groups?

I think the difference between the lacto-ovo vegetarians and the vegans and pesco-vegetarians could be due to reduced intake of snack foods and candy. When you commit to cut out milk and eggs, you give up milk chocolate, most baked goods, and all those Hostess & Little Debbie snacks. When you go vegan and give up gelatin too, you can hardly eat any candy or snacks at all. I want to see a study that controls for this variable.
However, the lacto-ovo vegetarians still had a lower mortality rate than the meat-eaters. Explain that.

The researchers note several limitations to the study. Participants only reported their diet at the beginning of the study, and their eating patterns might have changed over time.


In light of this research limitation, we could accept a more moderate conclusion, namely, that it is healthy to go vegan temporarily.
The participants who were initially vegetarian could have returned to meat during the study, in which case they might as well be considered a low meat group rather than a no meat group.

Anything containing salt, sugar and cholesterol should be consumed in small amounts and only ocassionally. In fact, the SDAs classify these foods as "for very limited use."

I wonder how strictly these rules are followed when their congregation isn't watching.
