Finding RF?

I got to know this for my final exam.

If I have a number of base pair, how do I find the RF?

How does people do that?
I purpose for asking is so that I can learn it. It is only going to cost me 2 points of my grade if I don't answer this but I care to learn.

Since the Rf depends on each gel (agarose concentration, voltage, buffer and time) there is no other way than running a standard and then plotting Log10(Bp) for each band of the standard vs their Rf. Then either you calculate the equation or you just read on the graph.

the distance a molecule travels in a gel is inversely proportional to the logarithm of the molecular weight.

--> so you can plot a curve where distance is set out against the logarithm of the molecular weigth and you will get a straight line.
