Alzheimer's tends to affect the formation of memories, not so often previously formed ones. So if they were told something about a doctor's appointment or when somebody was coming to visit they might fail to create this memory and not recall it later.

Language would have been learned a long time before, and therefore would still be accessible. Which isn't to say that they will have perfect recall, but learning new words will be where the problem lies.
