Need help on Stem Cells.... pleease!

Post by zenith_beth » Tue Nov 15, 2005 7:45 pm

In the term, '"lines" of stem cells', what is the definition of "line"?.. Also, I have written in an article: 'The ES cells (stem cells) are derived from an inner cell mass within that ball (blastocyst). Within six days, these ES cells would have received signalsinstructing them how to differentiate.'
What is the nature of the "signals" which he is referring to?

A "line" of stem cells is a group of stem cells with identical genetic material.

The "signals" are not that well understood. In a developing human fetus, they are not understood at all. All that we know so far is that if a stem cell is placed into a culture of specialized cells, the stem cells will differentiate into that particular specialty.

Thanks biostudent! But the question about the signals came up in as a question in an exam paper.. so I think that there might be some answer - I thought perhaps electrical signals? But I'm not sure.
