Can you help me identify this beetle? I found it floating in our pool. it appears to have a proboscis and I thought I saw a thin white band along the edge of the front of its shell. thanks in advance for your help!
Oh Wow! I just came on this site to look for an ID for a similar beetle, just like yours a small rounded black beetle with a long proboscis. I don't see the proboscis of yours unless it is bent under the body? The one I saw had a long thin proboscis like a hoverfly that was longer than the body. The norm for this type of beetle is a short thin elongation with feathered antennae on the end, which I can see on your photo. One feature of this type of beetle is that they can cling with remarkable strength, and it is almost impossible to shake them off your hand.
