Well in the part of the onion that is under ground chloroplasts are missing. But in the green leaves, i don't see what could be missing...

Yeah, he's right, the chloroplasts should be non existent because the onion is below the surface of the ground. It makes no sense for the onion to have unnecessary organelles when it doesn't need them. Unless some new form of light is discovered that penetrates the ground, he's right!

Have a look at chlorophil synthesis and interconversion of plastids. Not only it doesn't make sense, it is biochemically impossible...
