Please Help Identify My Unkown Bacteria!!

Post by KingsMomi » Tue Jul 31, 2012 3:40 am

Hello All,
I am trying to identify my unkown bacteria for my Microbiology class. Below are the test result and information I have gathered thus far. Any possible guesses on Genus and/or species would be greatly appreciated.

Initial Observation: opaque/ off white, slightly clump, slight growth on nutrient agar

Presumed Optimum temp: 37C

Oxygen Requiremets: Facultative Anerobe

Bacillus shape (small rods)

gram negative

non spore forming

not acid fast

NEGATIVE for casein, starch hydrolysis

Produces acid reaction with litmus milk

Fermentaion of sucrose, glucose, lactose & mannitol. All with gas production

Positive methyl red

Neg Simmons Citrate (I did see a little blue *very minimal*, but still negative compared to the control)

Neg indole

Neg VP test

Pos nitrate reduction ( produced nitrous acid)

Pos TSI (hydrogen sulfide produced)

Neg oxidase

Pos catalase

Neg Urea

Possible bacteria I am considering, using Bergy Manual (but I could still be absolutely wrong):

Genus Budvicia
Genus Leminorella
Genus Salmonella
Genus Cedecea

If any one has any possible ideas or can suggest an idea based on the addition of another test, let me know. Media is limited, so Im not sure whats available for me to use.

Where did you take your sample from and how was it collected?

I think it's either Pectobacterium wasabiae or Citrobacter freundii. Possibly Salmonella but not others you listed. Check the manual again. Also, minimal positive is positive not negative.

I suggest you check their characteristics and decide on the test that would distinguish between them.

Good luck!
