General sympathetic activation occurs in cases of stress, to trigger what is called "the fight or flight response" or "sympathico-adrenal response". It acts primarily on the cardiovascular system - accelerated heart rythm, raised blood pressure. It also decreases the movements of the intestine and widens bronchial passages. Also increases menthal activity (:) helps in exams)

It prepares our body to respond to a stressor, giving us the best chance to respond, and thus survive.
