you need to remember that in order for the body to produce energy which it does through the process of respiration(which is the breaking down of a substrate to produce energy) the body needs two things food(normally in the form of glucose ,and sometimes fats) and oxygen from the air we breath in. So therefore based on how effective your respiratory cycle is will determine if you'll have enough energy available to the body in vigorous exercise
