Protein Folding

Post by hannahzarzar » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:33 pm

Do many different amino acids sequences fold into the same tertiary structure? What data can back up your position?

According to what I understand amino acids fold into secondary structures. What does it mean the same tertiary structure?

the tertiary structure is the 3D structure of the protein, so the question is, whether you can have the same (3D) structure with different sequence.

You could use something like DALI search for that.

Cis or trans? That's what matters.

What is DALI?

Yes, I know that tertiary structures are 3D structures, but htey stem from the primary structure, which is made of amino acids. Don't they have to fold into secondary structures before they could fold into tertiary structures?

sure, they have to fold in secondary structure first. So?

I think what your teacher is getting at here is that primary sequence determines tertiary structure. The composition of the residues determines what the tertiary conformation of the protein will be. But you can have two proteins that have similar looking tertiary conformation with very different primary structure.
