Purpose
This is a layman's question but here it goes. How does a conglomerate of cells functioning through the interaction of electrical impulses and chemical signals intiate a thought. Is thought the result of external stimuli and not created, a loop of sorts where if the brain was shunted from the endocrine and nervous system it would cease to think, or is there some sort of way to iniate a thought?
That answer cannot be definitively answered because there is no answer for it yet. If we view the brain as purely mechanical then its affected by stimuli. If we think of it as a "mind" then we really don't know what happens when cells interact in complex ways.
