ORF, GENES, TEMPLATE STRAND

Question 1:
Why do the terms template strand and nontemplate strand have meaning at the level of genes and operons but not at the level of chromosomes?

Question 2:
The yeast genome is about 1.3 X 107 bp. The average gene codes for a protein of 42,000 molecular weight. The intergene distance (the average distance between adjacent ORFs) is about 500 bp. How many protein-coding genes could be accommodated by the yeast genome?

1. What makes a strand a template/non template one? What is the orientation of a gene?
2. Simple arithmetic, I am sure that you are intelligent and can deduce the average gene size form its product size then add to the number of space and see howm much can be crammed in a yeast chromosome.
