What exactly are you and he after? The defining characteristics of living organisms? If so, they are very straightfoward (nutrition, movement, growth, reproduction, respiration etc etc)

Or is it more along the lines of what distinguishes organic life from, say, artificial intelligence?

I answered DNA which is really the key of life but he said nope then I asked him what is the answer and he said Deoxyribo nucleic acid which is the DNA. I got confused bec. my answer was the same..DNA which is nucleic acid...
