Human Chromosome Number and Mitosis question.

Post by WannabeGenius » Sat May 22, 2010 1:48 am

I've just recently learned about mitosis and chromosome number of each human cell to have 46 chromosomes.

What i don't get is that examples of mitosis given only has about 3-4 chromosomes. What I've been reading is that each human somatic cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes.

Example: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~cbbc/courses/ ... itosis.JPG

8 chromosomes are visible and that is one cell. What confuses me is that it is a fact that each human somatic cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Why does it show only 8 chromosomes in ONE cell?

would you really want to see over 30 chromatids squished into one cell in a diagram? it's merely for aesthetics. it'd be hard to tell otherwise.
