Excessive and severe sore throats are the most common indicators of tonsilitis.

put your fingers on your throat and try to find those 2 small balls, I mean your tonsils. And try to feel how big they are. Normally it is harder to feel them. But if you have tonsilitis, you can feel them easier.
And sore throat is another indicator .

Not a good idea. If you have longer thingers, you will feel them easier

Tonsilitis or tonsil inflammation caused by lymphocytes hyperactivity due to pathogens come inside from airways or mouth, for instance influenza, pneumonia, etc. Tonsil is a secondary limphoid tissue that acts to trap antigens.

When pathogens, e.g. bacteria or viruses come inside, resident cells lining respiratory system and digestive system as macrophages and M cells will release IL-8 (chemokine) and IL-1 (cytokine) to attrack circulatory cells such PMNs and lymphocytes to the site of infection. Macrophages and B cells then flow to the tonsil to present the antigen to T cells (indicated by red, hot, and swelling of the tonsil and area surrounding).

T cells then activate B cells to differentiate and proliferate into plasma cells (mostly IgG and IgA) and memory cells for anticipating the following infection.

Prognosis:
First, act like you swallow something, if you feel a little bit 'painful' there is a swelling of your tonsil.
Second, get a mirror or ask someone to look at your throat opening after you stick out your tongue out (like what doctor does when examining new patient) see if they are red or very red rather than your palate.
Third, rub and press a bit your upper neck, feel whether there is little swelling.

That is one of the usual diagnostic methods. And it really works. You can feel them got bigger.
