In mistosis, can you explain why the mother cell can be diploid OR haploid? I don't understand how it could be haploid, because the daughter cells would be half of a haploid cell, right?

not quite. Think of it like this
you have 2n in a diploid, n in a haploid
in mitosis of a diploid cell, you'll get 4n when the chromosomes replicate
but then it divides into two daughter cells, which will each have 2n
in a haploid cell, n, you'll get 2n when the chromosomes replicate
Then the two resulting daughter cells will have n
The cell copies its DNA before it divides. Therefore, a cell will not have half its DNA during mitosis. Meiosis does this, but to diploid cells.
