Bcl-2 family proteins

Post by barny876 » Wed Sep 30, 2009 8:43 pm

Bcl-2 family proteins, which include pro- and antiapoptotic members, positively or negatively regulate MOM permeabilization, i.e. a barrier to apoptosis induction. Over-expression of pro-survival members is associated with tumor progression and may be responsible for drug resistance, while pro-apoptotic members may promote sustained cell death during both acute injuries and chronic degenerative disorders. Detailed understanding of the precise biochemical mechanisms by which Bcl-2 family members control mitochondrial apoptosis is therefore of considerable therapeutic interest.
