Hi and thank you for reading this.
I am taking an ILC Biology course and it is horribly run and not clear in methods. I have a question that I need help with and an answer that I have come up with. If someone could give me help with it as to if it right or how to fix it would be greatly appriciated. Thank you for your time.

Question
"A population has two alleled, B and b. The allele frequency of B is 0.73. What is the heterozygotes frequency, if the population is in H-W equilibrium?

My Answer
P2+2pq+q2=1
BB(p2)=0.533Bb(2pq)=0.394 bb(q2)=0.073=1

(0.73 + 0.27)2=(0.73)2 + 2(.73) +(.27)+(.27)2 = 0.533 + 0.394+0.073=1

(Please keep in mind that the big 2's are squared as I do not have a squared function on this computer)

you are overcomplicating it. you already have p=0.73. q=1-0.73=0.27.
Then you just use the frequence of the heterozygotes from the HW equation that i see you know: 2pq=2*0.73=0.27=0.394. Makes sense?

Hi Bond2112,

I am also doing Grade 12 biology and I am now doing the assignment with this exercise. I got the same answer. You are right, the book is not very clear on methods so we need to do research ourselves.
How far are you with your course? I am currently working on unit 4.
