HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Post by Jersey08205 » Sun Aug 09, 2009 8:53 pm

this is one of the questions on my take home final exam and i am completely stumpped or really stupid...don't know which..

12. A new virus that infects the leaves of tomato plants has recently been isolated. To study it, you start by digesting the virus particles with protease, and enzyme that completely digests all proteins into amino acids. When the remaining material is applied to wounded leaves it is capable of starting a viral infection. You determine that the base composition of the viral nucleic acid is 19% A; 15% T; 30% G; and 36% C.
To which of the following classes could the virus belong:
(i) double strand DNA virus
(ii) single strand DNA virus
(iii) double stranded RNA virus
(iv) single stranded RNA virus consisting of a coding strand
(v) single stranded RNA virus consisting of a non coding strand
EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER

this is actually not a hard question, but since it is your final I won't give you the answer (it wouldn't be fair to you or your fellow students). However, I will tell you to use Chargaff's rules

I want to add that Chargaff's Rule won't necessarily give you the answer, but you should understand it in the scope of this question.

Also, note the 4 specific amino acids that are listed and think about what they mean in relation to DNA and/or RNA.
