Arent I too young to have high blood pressure?!

Post by Twila » Thu Apr 30, 2009 1:21 pm

Ok so now, at 4 mos. under 18 Im getting stuck on a high blood pressure medicine! I just looked at the doc like... what.the.(Im sure you know what followed that).
I have to take it now 2X's a day(as in the cuff thing)... Im not fat at all... really, size 10-12 and 5'9" so its not like Im in denial about being fat lol though I am quite the soy sauce and salt addict... but still... that is so .... WRONG! I was also told to say off me bagels and creame cheese.... *sigh* no more monday breakfest bagels.....

seriously though... no one in my family for 2 generations has had this problem! how the heck... if you guys could let me know what to eat and not eat and other stuff that would be fab...

diet + exercise, I'm sorry, that's just the way your genes are.

well getting rid (or at least decreasing) blood pressure isn't very hard to plan. You should avoid eating fatty foods (and especially trans fat) and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Kind of a no-brainer really

High blood pressure at 18 is a bit scary but it seems that it is not that unusual anymore.

First of all if you are addicted to soy sauce which is 70% plus salt and to salt, overcoming your addiction might help you a lot.

The body cannot tolerate too much salt and salt is known to raise blood pressure.
Do you drink enough water? The body needs enough water to eliminate extra salt.

Bagels have very high glycemic index, which means they raise your insulin levels sharply. Try to eat sprouted bread instead.

Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Mine's also been highish since I was a kid. Just genetics in my case. My BMI is in the normal range and I get a lot of hard aerobic exercise. I've been a bicycle racer for 18 years. My brother's BP high too and he's 6% body fat.

All you can do is control the things that you can control (exercise, diet etc...), take your pills and get on with life. My Mom is 87 and has been taking BP pills since I was a little kid. (I'm 53 now) I also have a friend whose dad is 92 and has been taking BP meds since he was 40. It doesn't have to shorten your life.

Take care.
