what is the i function?

I am currently enrolled in A&P and my teacher wants us to write an essay on the i function, and all the interactions that goes on in the brain. now here is the problem: i have no idea what the i function is. can someone please some up what the i function is, or direct me to a good website where i can find information. thank you
