Independent Assortment vs. Segregation

Post by WiseIdiot » Sat Oct 25, 2008 6:00 pm

what's the difference?
To my understanding, independent assortment is each allele going separately into each offspring when doing the Punnet square thingy and not affecting the placement of other alleles of other gametes.
Segregation is the formation of unique gametes from the genotype of the parents, each gamete not affecting the other.

However, aren't these definitions almost identical?

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
