Genetic Exception?

Post by truthbetold » Wed Oct 22, 2008 7:31 am

I am 6 foot 3 inches and I may grow another 2-4 inches yet.
My parents are (dad) 5 foot 8 inches and (mom) 5 foot 4 inches.
My grandparents from my mom are 5 foot 11 and 5 foot 6 (about).
My grandparents from my dad are both about 5 foot 3.
My aunts are 5 foot 5 and 5 foot 7 (about).
All other relatives in the last 200 years were less than 5 foot 11 to my knowledge.

Genetically, is it possible for me to this tall?

There is no one height gene there are a many that contribute to height, it just seems you got all of the tall genes that your mother had combined with all the tall genes your father had. So although the probability of two parents of such a size having offspring of your height would be seen as unlikely it is far from impossible.

Plus height is not only controlled by genes, but by the environment. Notably availability of good quality food during your growth, and that has greatly improved even in the last 50 years.

saying height is not controlled by genes is actually incorrect..
yes the environment contributes to phenotype and can change it radically.
but you put two offspring with different height genotypes in the exact same environment, and their phenotype is highly unlikey to be at all the same.
