Relation between Blood Pressure and Pulse

Post by dipjyoti » Fri Jul 11, 2008 6:25 am

Can any one tell me what is the relation between Blood Pressure and Pulse?
And how can I measure BP through pulse, without using Blood Pressure Monitor?

Pulse is generated by heart activity, contraction and relaxation. In the contraction period, blood is pumped out of heart to lungs or systemic circulation, while in relaxation period, blood enter the heart. The time when the heart contracts is called systole, which is the highest blood pressure of an individual can reach. The time when the heart relaxes is called diastole, a period before the heart starts to contract again. This creates pulsatory blood flow. The pulse per se is the time when the heart contracts, pushing blood to flow into circulation.

You can measure blood pressure using sphygmomanometer. It has scale, not monitor :)

A lower pulse rate means the heart muscle is beating strongly, however I'm not sure if you can directly correlate that to blood pressure.

At one time I developed pancreatitis. Too much celebrating the doctor told me. Anyways, when I went to the hospital because I was feeling like crap, my BP was real low, and my heartrate was super high. So my point is, you need to measure both.

BTW, I gave up celebrating, since the doc said I could have croaked...

Has anyone noticed a markedly increased blood pressure from snusing? Since I quit cigarettes for 2 years prior to picking up snus, I feel as if it is inevitable for my blood pressure to go up some with using snus; only because of the nicotine intake.

It's gone from 90/40 to 120/80 which I know isn't bad, but I just feel as if that is quite an increase. Granted, this was taken probably int he fall/winter when it was 90/40 and I work out in the fall/winter a LOT more than in the summer, because I absolutely abhor heat.

Anyone else have any experiences with this?
