growing fetus

Post by opuntia » Wed Jun 15, 2005 1:49 pm

can any of you tell me what will happen to a growing fetus if the mother's excretory waste reaches to it through the umbilical artery?

A very bad situation. The child would no longer be in a sterile environment and would die if someting were to not be quickly done. The toxins would poison the susceptible child's immune system.

Really? That's a shocker. I would imagine it would be the complete opposite.

Have you forget about the Amnion (kinda liquid that protect the baby)? I've read it and one of the Amnion function is to prevent the fetus from bacteria (maybe it contains some antitoxin since one of the amnion former is Leucocyte)

If the toxins get to the baby via the umbilical cord the amnion can't do anything

I think you are right.

Possible, but i don't really think so. This happens very rarely, so evolution would not go towards people with such a defense mechanism. Also remember that the baby when it is born doesn't even have it's own immune system. What are the cahnces of it having such a defense mechanism?
