I recently watched the dvd "Cracking the Code of Life" by NOVA, which was mostly about the Human Genome Project. That was from 2001 when it was only half done.

So did the HGP get all 3 billion nucleotides mapped before Celera?

celera won, but only because the public sector opened their data to them.

The trick was that the international consortium made their data available on the internet as soon as it was obtained, while Celera Genomics did not. Therefore they obviously had an advantage. But despite that, the shotgun method introduced by Celera is now the dominant one, with almost all sequencing projects being done that way
