According to my philosophical understanding there are different kinds of love. Love for the country, love for parents, love for your partner, respect, etc. They are actually really different and I wish one didn't have to club them under one umbrella. If you ask me why love exists, I'd say it is just the effect of natural selection. How it came to be is however a sort of coincidence.

One form of love that took shape which could have had a revolutionary effect on evolution of all present mammals is maternal love. Why do I say so? I'll let you figure that out. (Hint: I define the opposite of this form of love as cannibalism).
PS: I happen to be a philosopher, rather than a true scientist...

I agree there are different kinds of love, but I also think they're generally the same reaction.

I just want a young, voluptuous hottie who wants to be with me for the lovable nerd that I really am.

opposite doesn't necessarily denote dislike, or even different goals or values.

The situations I've observed where "opposites" have attracted have been in cases such as:

A slob and a neatfreak
A career-oriented person and a free-spirit
A social extrovert and an introvert
An agressive A-type personality and a diminutive people-pleaser

The use of the word opposite really has to be categorical, since there can't be someone who is the opposite of someone else, in every single way. I eat food, food eats her...

Even people that seem so polarly opposed to each other in lifestyle, attitude, etc will still have basic similarities, and depending on what their values are, that might just be enough.

You're being way too hollywood centric. Don't say it like this is a trend everywhere.

Well I would say QFT but it seems some people aren't quite up on their internet-speak, so instead:
