Is Biopharming on the rise?

Post by bjw » Tue Jun 07, 2005 1:44 pm

Do you think the use of biotechnology to manufacture pharmaceutical products (PMPS) in crops is on the rise?

Any insight to why this technology is up and coming or why it is not is greatly appreciated!

Thanks! And have a good one!

Sure it's on the rise. It's used to create mass amounts of insulin everyday as we speak now.

I thought insulin was made in Ecoli and yeast.

Is it also being produced in crop plants and if so which and where?

Thanks

It's considered "unnatural" by many. Simple answer is that it's new and people are afraid of new things.

I meant that the insulin was made using plasmids, I misread the topic.

It took me 2 months to convince my mother that there's no danger in eating that food... It is on the rise... Although some people reject it now they will get used to it..

Haha. I usually give people the information on what is safe and what is not. If they choose not to listen to me.....well, we have a saying in America. It sucks to be them.

I've found it a bad idea to try and shove knowledge down someone's throat.

Yeah, people constantly ask me what I thing of as being "safe foods" and I usually get yelled at for telling them something is bad.

I think there's a slight difference from the original post. She's referring to plants/animals being used to create drugs not eating these animals. I think these would be kept apart from the normal farm produce(you wouldn't sell insulin fortified milk for 2bucks a gallon right?). So there's no danger of biopharmed animals invading the market.
