Hyenas

Post by victor » Sun Jun 05, 2005 1:18 pm

Most of us think that Hyenas are slick animals. They always taking away preys that've been killed by another animals (mostly are cheetahs'). But do ou know that beside their slick behavior, there are responsible behavior in them too. The survey said that Hyenas are good parents to their children.

Question

Post by victor » Tue Jun 07, 2005 8:04 am

Oh, yeah...I forgot bout that...my question is, Hyenas are much stronger than cheetahs or leopards but why they seldom hunt their prey by themselves? They prefer to "rob" their food from other animals that have killed their preys on their own....

Probably because they are too slow to catch anything. And isn't it better to let others do the work for you?

That's not fair

Post by victor » Fri Jun 10, 2005 1:09 pm

Hey, as a good people who loves cheetahs very much I can say that this is unfair because as you see that cheetah need an hour to charge their energy which will be used for chasing its prey for only 15 minutes but, after they get their prey, suddenly hyenas come and take it away. (I even have a poster that show a frustated cheetah chasing hyenas 1 by 3 only to get its prey back).
and about your statement above Andrew, that's not let others do the work for you but you take it away by force...

It is unfair victor. Nature is unfair. In nature there is no such thing as ethics, animals use every dirty trick in the book to survive... Survival of the fittest not the most honest

i read in a recent article that hyenas are actually quite lazy animals, after going on safari to kenya, i saw them in the flesh a few times, and they did seem to be very lazy,

They are lazy... Although they could probably catch a prey by their own, they prefere to steal it from other animals. But then again, some thiefs are very rich in human society too... just turn on the tv and look at politics if you don't believe me

i agree that they are lazy but sometimes they can catch prey by themself and they leave nothing letf of they prey body because thier jaws are very strong and they have a very powerful digest fluid so they can eat bone,horn,.....

Hyenas DO Hunt

Post by EdLincoln » Tue Mar 17, 2009 1:25 am

I think hyenas actually catch their own prey A LOT more than people assume, particularly the spotted hyena. Hyenas aren't the fastest sprinters, but they are among the best endurance hunters. The heart of a hyena is bigger than the heart of a lion. That is to pump blood and supply their heart with oxygen while they are running.
