Plea for information on autoclaving

Post by rowena03 » Tue Sep 25, 2007 6:59 pm

I'm a fiction writer, not a biologist, so I am hoping you fine people might have a moment to provide some crucial information.

From previous online research, I have learned about autoclaves (including instructions of use).

A major detail I am missing, however, regards the SOUND of an autoclave in use. Does it hum? Hiss? Make any noise at all? Can you hear the sound of the steam? I imagine it would sound something like a dishwasher, but I am relying heavily on information from anyone here who has used one.

Also, any links or information on basic laboratory maintenance would be greatly appreciated.

Really depends on the autoclave. Really. I worked with quite a number of those in plenty different sizes...

But usually it satrts with some gurgling and hissing as the void is done, the boiler is emptied and filled and the chamber filled with steam, then there are lenty of clicks and clacks with the occasional gurgling sound during sterilization. At the end there is a few clacks during cooling and generally a rather strident end of cycle alarm

Thank you times a million, canalon! :D Not just for the descriptions of the sounds, but for the descriptions of the processes as well. This information will be invaulable as I begin to develop character and plot.

I very much appreciate your time and effort.
