Niche?

Post by soylentgreeen202 » Sat Aug 11, 2007 3:52 am

Just wondering how the word Niche is pronounced. Is it more of a nitch or a neesh?

We pronounce it 'neesh', but then this is the UK.

It should be 'neesh', but I'm not 100% sure that is the only acceptable pronunciation.

It's not unusual for it to be "nitch," either.

Rule of thumb - however many ways there are to pronounce a term, you can find somebody somewhere using each and every one.

Heck, I just found out in the past year that the second "p" in "apoptosis" is supposed to be silent!

It makes sense, really, but most folks still pronounce it.

I always thought the 'pop' in that word was quite good considering what it means, cell death and all that lol

Erm I have professors that pronounce the "pop" in apoptosis. Also I have professors that said "nitch" as well as "neesh".

I think it has more to do with your background than with "correct" pronunciation. For example how would you pronouce Caryophylaceae? Or Bairdii? There are some general rules, but for the most part, just find something you're comfortable with and stick to it.

PS: neesh is the snooty way to say it :D

I'm in the US.

I've heard both "nitch" and "neesh".

For myself, I use them interchangeably depending on what's going on. :)
