Tetrad Analysis

Post by biology_06er » Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:50 am

Hey there,

Got a lab coming up one the above topic in Sordaria and just wondering a few things...ok so the instructions say to placea few perithecia (those are the rod shaped structures containing the spores right?) on microscope slide etc etc and cover with coverslip...then it goes on say examine as many asci and record the number arising by 1st division segregation as opposed to 2nd division segregation and we should aim to examine at least 100 asci...

ok so my question is...when we look under the microscope wat exactly will i be seeing??...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascus ..is it something like this i will see?-top piceture that is....so each "column" is an ascus? so will i see like 100 of these columns?? and also how can i tell wat is the different segregations....i kiiiind of get the 2:2:2:2 and 4:4 ratio thing but not really...

help will be greatly appreciated!
cheers,
