Is it possible that after all the microfloral processing in the digestive system, the reason for the smell is to stop other people from eating it? There seems to be a 'disgust' response hard-wired in the human brain.

I recall vividly a David Attenborough program where Gorillas ate their own poo - "it makes a warm meal on a cold day". Mmmm!
I imagine that we have no (or a very limited) behavioural response to the smell of crap - all mammals have smelly faeces.[/i]
