Post by novo' » Sun May 13, 2007 10:31 am

hey there
i'm gonna take the Bio AP tomorrow morning and I've got 2 questions

1) What is gel electrophoresis and how can i solve proplems asked on this topic ?

2) Is the barr body the structure that deactivates one of the female X-chromosomes, or is it the actual inactive X-chromosome in females ?

1) see that, it should answer most of your questions (plus links in it). And it was correct at the time I checked

the barr body has genes/proteins that differ from the other x chromosome. You can tell the difference by applying electrophoresis to assay a cell to see whether a protein of interest known to be on one x chromosome is present or not. Simple huh

well, the barr body can be seen at an optical microscope after appropriate coloration. If you want to be sure, use FISH.
