How many ATPs are generated in glycolysis?

Post by junbumkim » Sun Mar 25, 2007 1:11 pm

In glycolysis, there are two pyruvate molecules generated per a molecule of glucose.

But how many ATPs are generated per a molecule of glucose?
Does conversion of ATP from ADP occur at "glucose -> Glucose 6-phosphate", and "Fructose 6-phospate -> Fructose 1,6-biphosphate"?

What happens at the conversion of "1,3-Disphosphoglycerate -> 3-Phosphoglycerate"? Is it ATP->ADP or ADP-> ATP

Thanks you?

2 to phosphorylate, but you get 4 back.

The complete glycolytic cycle includes the Krebs cycle not just the Embden-Meyerhoff pathway. Ergo the total gain of Adenosine Triphophates is somewhere, depending upon the metabolized product, between 32 -35
ATP's. 8)

Glucose to glucose 6 phosphate requires to the coversion of atp to adp.
The next step is glucose to glucose 1-6 diphosphate and then the conversion to fructose 1-6 diphospohate and then breakdown in 1-3 dipohosglyceric
phosphoglyceraldehyde - but I may be a bit foggy on that step. however,
after this step the conversion to acetic acid results in the gain of 4 ATP's.
Acetic Acid then enters the Krebs cycle at the surface of the mitochondrion
which possesses the enzymes and substrates to complete the production of ATP.

38 ATPs ? Or so I remember.
