How are sex-linked characteristics different from traditional Mendelian characteristics?

Recessive sex-linked genes are most commonly found in males. As the Y chromosome holds very little genetic information, if there is a recessive gene on the X chromosome, then there is usually no corresponding dominant gene to counter it.

Meaning they don't happen purely by chance since there is another factor. Think about the mendelian experiements with pea plants and how the probablities of a phenotype would manifest.
