Zeiss, Nikon and Leica are good names in microscopy. If you can afford them, start there. If you are after lots of magnification, I'd look for a 100X objective and 10x ocular configuration. There is no point in more magnification, you are reaching the limit of resolution of an optical scope. Consider whether you need epifluorescence.
