A spherical cell with a radius of 10 um contains 1,000 signaling protein X molecules. Protein X is globular with a radius of 10 nm and moves freely in the cell. What are the global and maximal local concentrations of protein X in the cell? If protein X is myristoylated and becomes membrane-bound but is still able to move freely in the lipid bilayer, what are the global and maximal local concentrations of proteins X in the cell? For a sphere, volume=(4/3) πr3, surface area = 4 πr2.
