X chromosome inactivation

Does X chromosome inactivation only occur in female?? Is that any possibality that happens on male??

Hi Nicklowkc,

X chromosome inactivation happens only in the presence of multiple X chromosomes. Male cells do contain only one X chromosome and do therefore not have X chromosome inactivation. X chromosome inactivation is happening through transcriptional repression of the X chromosome. The X chromosome of male germ cells is in a condensed chromatin state and is transcriptionally repressed during early spermatogenesis but to my knowledge this is not considered as "X chromosome inactivation".
In mammals, X chromosome inactivation is random and can happen on the paternal or on the maternal X chromosome.
