It must be near the end of the nail. The underside of the fingers contain most number of natural flora and other microorganisms than the other parts of the body. The opportunistic nature of those microorganisms could have caused the infection.

I do not think pheromones are active in Humans. I have seen male animals being badly attracted to females when female wants 'that'. It occures when the ova in female matures and their genital organ sheds some smell. The males detect the 'right' female by that smell. So, I believe that human females ...
