Re: any existing genetic method can make people live longer

I have no idea about existing methods, but my biology teacher told me about research that's being done on tellomeres, which are apparently the limiting factor of cell replication. With a bit of google-ing you might be able to find someone who's messing around with them in their basement or something...

Re: origin of life

Hi! I posted a similar topic a while back, you can go look at that if you'd like. If you can't be bothered, this the link to an article which my biology teacher gave us to look at (and I liked enough to find on the internet): m I'm pretty sure the thing with origin of life is that it's kinda undecid...

Re: Alright, this is a bit silly but....

Yeah, but a photosynthesising human could move AND still eat (to get nutrients). Plus I was joking when I said it made them smarter (sorry to all the heterotrophic organisms out there), it was more of a query as to why there aren't really organisms that get their sustenance both ways (or are there.....

Alright, this is a bit silly but....

Ok, so a friend in my biology class and I were discussing the most efficient way to get energy (eg. photosynthesis, cellular respiration etc.) and the question came up about why organisms other than plants don't utilise chloroplasts (I'm under the impression they were incorporated into a symbiotic r...

Re: The Trigger for Human Evolution from the Ape

That's a good thought, but how would it come about through natural selection? Would the fact that the babies that could not hold on better were no longer more likely to survive mean that there was a more equal chance for all babies, with the more intelligent eventually being selected? Hmm....

Re: Boy And Girl Possibility

Cool article! It reminded me of a question I asked my teacher when we were learning about Polysomy that she couldn't answer, but I might give it a try here. My teacher told us that Polysomic (if it wasn't a word before, it is now) sperm had a lesser chance of fertilising an egg because of the weight...

Re: Boy And Girl Possibility

That's roughly what I'm thinking, stress = hormones = higher acidity . So the birth rate would depend on the environment, though I don't think natural selection would produce more boys overall as, for reproductive purposes, usually more girls than boys would be advantageous; more boys would only rea...

Re: Origin of Life

I'm in my second year of college which is Australian year twelve, and possibly the senior year of high school in America (if American high school movies have taught me anything), so I've done about a year and a half of biology, no chemistry though. I know I might mention it annoyingly often but ever...

Re: The Trigger for Human Evolution from the Ape

Wow this is a great topic! I think the logic in all of your posts is really good and, well, logical. It is an interesting query about the 'trigger'. While I agree that the over-crowding and resource competition makes sense, I can't help but wonder whether there was something more, as I would have th...

Re: Origin of Life

Yeah, I agree with what you said. There are a lot of theories that could work (life from space etc.) as well, and it was good to have the one from your text book as in my original post I did want to know about other theories and what people thought of them. Also, with my very limited science, it see...

Re: Boy And Girl Possibility

Heh, thanks. I'm not sure of the typical Californian greeting, but I appreciate your cultural knowledge As for the birth rate, I had the same idea about preservation of the species = higher acidity levels but a friend pointed out that the body probably wouldn't know that the species was under threat...

Re: Boy And Girl Possibility

I've heard the y-chromosome = fast, x-chromosome = resilient thing before also. Let me know if this is too off-topic but my teacher said the other day that the birth rate of boys during war time is higher than that of girls and when I asked her why she said something about the acidity of the vagina ...
