I was talking about sexual reproduction. Gametes are haploid cells (sperm and egg) with n number of chromosomes. When the sperm and the egg fuse, they form 2n somatic cells. I've seen it happen with sea urchins before. Asexual would be with spores if it was with plants, I believe. I'm not so sure ab...

Pretty much prokaryotes use asexual reproduction, and eukaryotes use either asexual or sexual or both. Mitosis is when cells replicate exact copies, which happens in your body all the time. So I would think that would also be asexual. Meiosis is the reduction division that makes a somatic cell (2 pa...

endosome?

What exactly is the role of the endosome in regards to the Golgi Apparatus and the lysozome? I know what the two latter organelles do, but I'm getting a position in a research lab and we will be working with this process. I read some scientific papers on it, but most of it was over my head of course.

plasmids

How exactly are plasmids extrachromasomal? What role do they naturally play, besides their use in gene technology?

I don't find anything wrong with it, and I'm personally opposed to abortion. For one thing, these cells that they are using are going to go to waste otherwise. Whether you find in vitro fertilization right or wrong, they are going to go to waste. So I don't see it as an abortion. And from what I've ...

How do they know when to start/stop transcription from the DNA to the RNA? Are promoters, basal factors, etc. still involved with rRNA and tRNA as in mRNA? I apologize if these questions sound basic, but I'm still a general biology student.

ALu??

What is the role of ALu in transposons? I know that LINEs have the mechanisms needed for jumping around chromosomes and that SINEs use LINEs, but I don't know the role of ALu.

How are tRNA and rRNA molecules coded for? Wouldn't they require a start/stop codon?

I've never touched them, but my Anatomy class saw them for a fieldtrip in April. I found them very interesting, and it made me even more excited about med-school. The smell is strong, though. I was sick that week and almost passed out. I personally love medicine and every kind of dissection. But it'...

Do what you think you like best. I'm starting pre-med courses in August as a freshman, a big change from the journalist I wanted to be a year ago. If your high school offers an Anatomy class your senior year, you should consider taking it. That's what really helped me decide. You can also attend ext...

I think you inherit certain genes that enhance or inhibit certain (especially physical) characteristics. But a lot of talent has to do with a person's ambition, which often comes from external experiences.

Embryonic Stem Cells

Does anyone know if embryonic stem research is ever taken from aborted fetuses, or is it always from extra eggs in fertilization clinics?
