Zygotic gene


noun, plural: zygotic genes

Any of the developmental genes transcribed from the DNA of the zygote.


In Drosophila embryogenesis, zygotic genes can be classified into segmentation genes, (i.e. gap genes, pair-rule genes, and segment polarity genes) and homeotic genes.

Also called: zygotic-effect gene
Compare: maternal gene, paternal gene.
