Zeolite

zeolite

(Science: chemical) A term now used to designate any one of a family of minerals, hydrous silicates of alumina, with lime, soda, potash, or rarely baryta. Here are included natrolite, stilbite, analcime, chabazite, thomsonite, heulandite, and others. These species occur of secondary origin in the cavities of amygdaloid, basalt, and lava, also, less frequently, in granite and gneiss. So called because many of these species intumesce before the blowpipe. Needle zeolite, needlestone; natrolite.

Origin: Gr. To boil: cf. F. Zeolithe.

If we look at zeolite crystals (which have the property of trapping organic material) found in rocks 4 billion or more years old, there is not even that. In the same ...

... silver halide complex. The fiber is a composite consisting of a low-cost nanofiber and particulate ingredients, such as an activated carbon and zeolites. The activated carbon intercepts the chemical contaminants, while the nanofibers help to intercept even very fine particulates. The nanofiber ...

... water uptake the swelling process can also be monitored as a function of time. Prado et al. (1999) studied the water uptake of water in pellets of zeolite using SPI. This was necessary due to the small T2-relaxation times of water in micro-porous materials. Zeolites are used in separation processes, ...
