Valsalva, Antonio Maria

(1666-1723): An Italian physician and anatomist whose research is focused on the anatomy of the ear, especially the middle and internal ear, the muscles of the external ear and the pharyngeal muscles.


Antonio Valsalva is the one who coined the term eustachian tube. He is also the first to describe Valsalva maneuver intended for use in expelling pus from the middle ear. His name is also associated with the Valsalva antrum of the ear, Valsalva’s muscle and taeniae Valsalvae.
