trisomy

an abnormal condition where there are three copies, in stead of two, of a particular chromosome within the cell. For instance, humans having a total of 47 chromosomes in the cell in stead of the typical number of 46 chromosomes. An example of this condition is downs syndrome sufferers having trisomy of chromosome 21.
