The first fully formed scientific theory of evolution by Jean Baptiste Lamarck in his 1809 book Philosophie Zoologique to describe the altering of one species into another.

The transmutation of species is an archaic term for evolution. The concept of transmutation of species existed long before Charles Darwin published On The Origin of Species (1859).
