Transcriptase

Definition

noun

A polymerase that catalyzes the process of reverse transcription.

Supplement

Reverse transcriptase, or simply transcriptase, makes use of RNA molecule as a template for the synthesis of a complementary DNA strand. It is produced by HIV and other retroviruses in order for them to synthesize DNA from their viral RNA.

It is also found to be involved in the movement of certain mobile genetic elements, such as the Ty plasmid in yeast, in the replication of other viruses such as hepatitis B and possibly in the generation of mammalian pseudogenes.

It was discovered in 1970 by two independent scientists, Howard Temin and David Baltimore.

Synonym: RNA-dependent DNA polymerase, reverse transcriptase.
See also: reverse transcription.

targeting the Aids virus

... use. This completely destroys HIV-1. But, there are many other mutants out there. We must somehow use an irreversible inhibitor on the reverse transcriptase enzyme.

PCR from cDNA question

... RNA sample have been heated at 65C for 5min before electrophoresis to eliminate hairpin structures. The cDNA was obtained using iScript reverse-transcriptase, primed by random hexamers. Curiously, the same cDNA gives weird results when taken as template to amplify specific gene products: for ...

delete cDNA stop codon for fusion with fluorescent tag

Hi, Can I use the normal reverse transcriptase kit to obtain the cDNA instead of those cDNA construction kit which contains a specialized vector? Im going to clone it into the vector of my choice. And we decided to change our strategy. We ...

Viral budding

... I have explained the lytic and lysogenic cycles and wanted to mention the reproduction process of retroviruses with the assistance of reverse transcriptase. Taking the HIV virus as an example, upon completion of viral proteins being synthesised inside the host cell, the mature virus can then ...
