theobromine

(Science: chemistry) An alkaloidal ureide, C7H8N4O2, homologous with and resembling caffeine, produced artificially, and also extracted from cacao and chocolate (from theobroma Cacao) as a bitter white crystalline substance.

Synonym: dimethyl xanthine.
