Thalidomide

thalidomide

(Science: drug) sedative drug that when taken between 3rd and 5th week of pregnancy produced a range of malformations of the foetus, in severe cases complete absence of limbs (amelia) or much reduced limb development (phocomelia). A teratogen.

Sugar isomers

I thought they banned the use of thalidomide for morning sickness in the sixties due to all the birth defects.

... safe since we've been using it for thousands of years. I think left-handedness of regular chemicals doesn't necessarily make it safe. For example, thalidomide the commonly used drug for morning sickness also causes birth defects. One enantiomer is the drug, the other is a poison.

why only L-amino acids?

... wouldn't work if your solution of L-amino acids was rapidly switching between two confirmations. All this chirality stuff reminded me of the Thalidomide tragedy in the 1950s and 60s. A drug given to pregnant women for morning sickness, but it was a racemic mixture and they didn't know that ...
